Prolly 1/8th of the watts required to run it.

Reply to turpit

Hmm, think a ThermalTake Tough Power 1,200watt PSU could take it?

Reply to xpyrofuryx

don't post this unless you have thousands just lying around and somehow are going to start a business selling teraflops PLEASE!

and you'd be dumb to do that with the barcelona launch on the horizon

That's a socket 940 board, not AM2; it uses registered DDR, only one of the PCIe slots is 16x, the other is 4x, and it wouldn't even support SLI anyways. Even if configured properly, that system wouldn't be able to provide 1 Teraflop of accessible computing power.

That motherboard alone costs $1,587.99 on newegg, while each Opteron 890 costs $1,509.00 and the system would still get handled by a overclocked QX6700.

Reply to Heyyou27

If this is ever made. I guess much less than 1TF
If (and a BIG IF) you can use the GPU to crunch plain numbers, then you will be closer to 1TB. But that will require some very specialized custom software.
This kind of supercomputing in a PC will be more common in 4-5+ years.
Until then, the GPU power is mostly for physics (someone sometime will get it right)

BTW, what you describe must require a huge-ass case.

I guess xpyrofuryx is dreaming. Safe enough.

Probably not.

Reply to SEALBoy

The computing power for such system should be 4x2.8GHz opterons = 4x ~30Gflops each= 120Gflops, 2x8800GTX Ultra = 2x550Gflops each = 1.1Tflop. The only way to use that is only in games. However, most games support no more than Dual core CPUs.

Reply to Techfan

how would 32gb ram and two 2.66 quad core clovertowns do on a dual xeon board?

Reply to cbhm

A lot. Enough do to whatever you want to do. Except I think that that motherboard won't be compatible with those Opterons. And Barcelona will be out soon.

I'd say about .65TFLOPS or so. If you use GPGPU code, you will get at least 1 TFLOP. If you really want it for speed, I'd say get two Opterons and two ClearSpeed coProcs. That should get you above a TFLOP.

Then you can swap the dual cores out for Barcelona later this year.

What a rubbish statement. If you're that attached, go where he is.

Why when each new Intel CPU gets 1.2Tflps per gallon?

Reply to CompTIA_Rep

I don't know where he went. There is nothing informative in this forum anymore. Just baron fud and AMD vs Intel rubbish.

It's not just JJ, a lot of people dissapeared with him.

Reply to djgandy

Since the only way to find the actual flops a computer is capable of, why don't you build the rig and let us know the outcome.....

So he was being stupid???

Good, I felt real stupid for a minute there!!

Dell latest XPS710 H2C has about 6 gigaflops in total (just graphics i think)

PS3 has about 3 teraflops I think....

So I'm agreeing with a guy before me who said about 1, maybe a bit less.

Reply to jonisginger

Might be 3.3teraflops though?! Not sure...Cell BBE is powerful stuff

It's a joke. Taken from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It's the answer to "The Ultimate Question".

As for who is JJ, well, he was a poster that use to frequent this place.

Reply to NMDante

Ahhhhhhhhhh ok. I posted my rather anticipationious question as you posted your answer. Thanks for the answers :D

Want to hear funny? Tom's blocks the name of the site they went to. It looks like a lot less name calling since they all left so good riddance.

And here at Tom's, we aim to keep it that way.
These forums can do without the social "my spacers" causing "drama".

Anyway,
Agreed, the only good way to find out is build it! So build it! Now! Thats an order! Now I said! .... Now!....

You guys need to stop before this thread gets locked. Go into the "other"second if you need to work something out.

I hearby request you both contribute something relevant to the thread right now.

The Cell's peak theoretical performance was around 1Tflop when clocked at 4GHz, but as I recall that was purely add instuctions, and no real code would consist of this; in real world situations, the cell would be a fraction of a teraflop, but that doesn't mean it's a slow chip by any means; Sony just used the teraflop number to get fanboys excited.

Hey, as I said the ClearSpeed coProcs are burning up the TFLOPS and they are abotu the same price as Opteron 890. Maybe a little more. Also, the FireStream GPGPU from AMD gets 1 TFLOP is XFire mode with 2 Opterons.
ClearSpeed is a major player in HPC.

I guess that will be FUD too. That's what happened. The thread was progressing fine until one of Jack's seemingly spurned lovers came out.

Ah, well if they Cell outputs Max 1TF that this rig should put out more than a gigaflop or two hahaha.

On a serious note, is there any way to roughly calculate it?

Also, these are supposed to port to Socket G when Barcelona brings native support for them so you will be able to get them as chips or cards.

He said and I quote "baron's fud." That wasn't called for in a thread about a system setup. I will never take that from anyone. I am probably the most prolific poster here. He could have said nothing about me.

Agreed, but your reply above was to turpit, not djgandy who mentioned "baron's fud", that's why I said he (turpit) was most likely referring to the "F off" statement. As for prolific, why would anyone be concerned about that on a free forum? Even still, that's a bit arrogant, no? ;)

They are 65 GFLOPS :S

So Turpit you got the Mod slot!

Congrats...

And Baron thanks for your quality contributions.. Maybe you should be a mod you know, telling people to leave and all.. That should keep the site around quite a while.

To the OP... If you are looking for TFlops there are other third party offerings that are built specifically for speed.

Could you please explain what you would be doing with the above config? That way we might be able to recommend a possibly pre-canned and warranted platform.

Reply to Ches111

Probably around 0.6 TeraFLOPS, which is 600 GigaFLOPS.

But that's with NVIDIA's CUDA paltform.

I'm pretty appalled that you would talk to people like this. This is probably one of the reason they went over to ... Nobody wants to be talked to like that. To be quite frank with you. I'm VERY surprised that you get away with being a moderator with this type of attitude. I guess Tom doesn't have an annual review huh?

Good Luck BaronMatrix. If I was your parent I would have defiantly beat you more than they did.

Hes not a moderator, and honestly, I find your comment as rude as his was.

As Comptia pointed out however, that is not the topic of this thread, so lets all stop derailing it.

You're right, but he hasn't asked the right question yet. To formulate the question we will need to create a giant analog computer.
