My hp pavilion dv7-1247cl doesnt recognize dvds

When I insert the dvd the drive spins and hums but media smart won't load and when I go to windows explorer it doesn't recognize that there is anything in the drive. I've downloaded and installed hp's recommended driver sp43710 but to no avail. How do I know if it's a driver or the drive itself?
