I'm buying a 20.1" wide screen monitor with 1680*1050 resolution.

Will a 7600GT handle CS:S and a 3D animation program smoothly?

counter strike yes

3d program...which one??

i would say yes, though for 3d designing and stuff the quadro series are generally better...but they also cost a lot more.

For CS:S, you're probably okay, but if you intend to ever play any newer games at that resolution, you're going to want something with a bit more kick, and some more memory to boot.

Don't know about the 3d program. It can be tricky because it really depends on the drivers of the card vs the 3d language of the program.

High settings for CS:S, too?

Blender, which is actually really easy on the hardware. I think the CPU will matter more for rendering objects.

And I'm not getting a Quadro...

I don't. I probably won't be getting another game until my next computer.

Blender will be fine, and CPU is the main concern.

For preview etc the GF7600 will be more than fine.

I'd pick something else for the 2D benefits, like a GF8600 or HD2600, but the GF7600GT will be fine for all those needs you listed.

I'm thinking about getting a 8600GT instead. The lowest price on newegg is $99 for the 8600GT and $85 for the 7600GT. $15 dollars difference. But I'm uncertain about the performance because this review says the 7600GT is much better, while this review says the 8600GT is much better. Perhaps there is a driver problem and the 8600GT is better.

What do you guys think?

yeah easily, however, i would get 8600 so you can play DX10 game but more importantly watch HD films that high res
