I'm trying to sort out a problem with a friends Pentium4 HT 3.4ghz, its suffering from random crashes and hangs. First thing I did was swap out the memory with my own PC3200 memory in a 3.0 HT machine when I did this I noticed its using PC2700(333) memory. FSB for the 3.4 is 400 does this mean the original memory was running 20% above its designed speed? or is memory speed not related to CPU clock speeds.
I've tried the Intel site but cant seem to find specs on memory speed requirements per CPU speed.
I'm probably missing something obvious here..so go easy on me..

P4 memory doesn't have to run at FSB speed, though it's best if it does. So unless the memory bus is overclocked in the BIOS it should be running at the rated speed automatically.

thanks for that MarkG, I'd been wary of the machine as its a "Tiny PC" so I immediately thought they'd been cutting corners. I did put the PC2700 memory in my own box which hung after 5 mins. So I'm still suspicious of the quality of this unbranded memory...
