PC Rebooting!!

Hi,


I have a brand new P4 3.0Ghz, Gigabyte board, VIA chipset, 512MB RAM,
DVDWriter etc.

I have installed Windows XP and nothing else.
For some reason my PC intermittently reboots for no apparent reason.

I have formatted and loaded XP plus Service Pack 2, same problem.
I have formatted and checked with Multiple anti-virus programs definately
not a virus.

It reboots and after it does I find this entry in the registry.
Nothing in the EventViewer though.

%systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

I have considered overheating, definately not the problem.
I have considered a virus, but ruled that out after exhaustive checks
I have considered a corrupt XP installation but used a different
installation CD too.

Could it be hardware ? Anyone ever come across this message ?

Try turning off the auto restart option and see if the resulting Blue Screen
yields any useful info. Go to Control Panel->System Properties->Advanced
Tab->Start-up & Recovery Section->Settings button. Uncheck the box next to
Automatically restart..... and OK out of there. The next time your system
crashes you should get a Blue Screen that will provide information such as
error codes. Post those back.

Spontaneous reboots can be related to overheating, or flakey RAM. If you
don't get a Blue Screen then it is possible that your system is experiencing
a power loss. Ensure your system is securely plugged into the power source.
Try to have your computer on it's own circuit if possible.

Could also be a result of corrupt or outdated driver. TTFN.

If it is random, and it is not heat related, two things come to mind: Power
Supply and RAM.
Those are two common causes of random locks/restarts.

Test the ram with memtest6+ from http://www.memtest.org/ and the MS
Windows memory diagnostic tool from: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

Let each one run overnight.

Yep, those are the first two choices. If your RAM is 2X256M, take one out
and run ot that way, then swap them and try it. If it reboots with one but
not the other, that's likely the problem. Power supplys are a litle harder
to find, but many newer MBs have built-in support or come with software that
will monitor your core voltages. If you have this you can look for voltage
drops and/or unstable voltages. Try re-seating all of the power supply
connectors. If it still drops out, you'll need to replace it.

If both of these fail, it's probably the MB or Processor.

reboot to see if there are any other messages flashing past.
