A computer virus that controls the tray mechanism of an old CD drive. Replace the drive and see if that one has a properly working tray mechanism before you go too far with the virus causes it theory.

I'm with badge.

Most malware tries to remain obscure, hiding away and doing things in the background. Not advertise its presence by opening and closing the CD tray randomly.

Rogue antispyware apps will openly run, but this is by design.

Try booting your PC into safe mode, if the CD tray continues to open and close the odds are that it is faulty as most malware cannot run in safe mode.

How to boot into safe mode tutorial:

rather than tapping the F8 key once, tap it repeatedly in about 1 second intervals.

If the CD tray remains closed in "Safe mode" try using winpatrol (freeware) to control what runs on your pc. Disable start-up items one by one until you nail the culprit.

Winpatrol free by BillP studios:

The image below shows a box that is checked "Display Secret Startup Locations (Advanced Mode)"

This option is designed by BillP Studios to display malicious processes and rootkit type activity usually adopted by malware to remain hidden. Make sure this is checked.
