how do I remove unnecessary running programs from the windows task manager

You can uninstall uneeded programs from the add/remove function in the control panel. Unwanted programs can be removed from the startup folder in the all programs menu.

Other programs starting up can be disabled from the program preferences (ie: yahoo messenger, msn messenger...etc)

Anything else can be disabled from start-->run-->msconfig-->startup tab
