Hey guys/gals

Does anyone know an idiot-proof way to set up a home network? I was thinking along the lines of software the auto configures everything for you. (I've had a loom at Network Magic, but it only supports a few select routers)

Currently, all the computers are plugged into an ADSL2+ router, using DHCP. They all get internet, but none of the computers can see each other, share files, printers etc. (The network map in Norton Internet Security can recognise the pcs, but windows can't)

The computers-

1)Desktop XP Pro, running NIS2008
2)Laptop Vista Home Premium, running NIS2008
3)Desktop 2000 Pro, running Avast! and ZoneAlarm
4)Laptop XP Home, running Avast! and ZoneAlarm

The only time the computers can see each other, is if I uninstall all AV/Firewall software, and disable windows firewall.

Eurgh, I've read countless "Networking Setup Guides" ranging from miscombobulated NetBEUI setups, the "just use the Network Setup Wizard in XP and everything will work" approach to "plug everything in at will always work approach."

Anyone know any useful setup guides, or software that can auto-configure everything?

Could be something to do with your firewall programs, make sure you have sharing enabled on each machine, and make sure each IP address is in the trusted zone of each firewall, IE Norton and zonealarm on your 4 systems.
