Blackberry newbie questions - 3rd party email server

I use a third party pop3 mail server (Burrotech Officemail) on my peer
network. A couple of the workers want to get blackberrys purely for email,

Will a Blackberry work with "any" email server, or do I need Exchange, Lotus
etc..?

Or alternatively can the Blackberry desktop software squirt emails at the
Blackberry device directly from and Outlook 200 inbox?

Any help appreciated as finding this info at blackberry.com has proved
impossible so far.
