I'm thinking that 1333 bus speed is going to make the 6850 a better CPU for games, + I bet you could clock that bitch to 4.5+ ghz. I read someplace someone had one to over 5.......

My biggest problem right now is I don't want to wait!! I need a new pc bad haven't upgraded in like 3+ years

My new build was going to be..

ULTRA Ultra Black Aluminus ATX $68
Cooler Master RP-600-PCAR eXtreme Power 600W ATX12V SLI Power Supply $69
ASUS P5K LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail $140
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4GHz LGA 775 $223
Apida DDR2 6400 800MHZ 2GB $92 with heat spreaders
Ultra Products ULT-33186 ChillTec Thermo Electric CPU Cooler $135
ASUS GeForce 8600GT $140
Seagate 500GB SATA 300 7200RPM 16MB Hard Drive $107.50
Sony AWG170S-B2 Sony AW-G170S 18x Black Dual Layer DVD-RW SATA $40

For gaming yes, the 6850 would be better. Since most things arn't mulithreaded yet the faster dual core would be better. If you multitask a lot and plan on keeping it for a long time as multithreaded aps start popping up more frequently, the quad core would be better

you cant wait 20 days? the wait would be worth it.

i would suggest the e6850 for gaming

You might want to spend more on the VGA card and less on the cpu for gaming.
July 2, 2007 2:46:15 PM

I don't know what you'll want to do with your rig, but if I'm in your position, I'd skimp on the stuff and upgrade to a better GPU and not with the skimping going on, I bet there's no need to worry about the CPU

get the xeon equivalent of the q6600, the x3220, and put that xeon sticker on your case proudly :D

for gaming

instead of an expensive cpu get a cheap core 2 duo or athlon x2 & the geforce 8800 gtx

Wait, your GPU and your coolers are going to cost the same? 8O

I think you should re-think that.
July 2, 2007 4:20:26 PM

for gaming, get an E2160 and overclock to 3ghz, get a decent air cooler for $40-60, spend the money you save on at least an 8800GTS 640, or a GTX if your budget will stretch

that PC would be much much better for gaming than the build you are proposing

the difference between a stock 2160 with a GTS, versus an overclocked Q6600 is about 2 frames per second, the difference between an 8600GT and an 8800 GTS on any CPU is massive
July 2, 2007 4:35:28 PM

Wait for the price cuts. 20 Days is worth several hundred dollars in my opinion. No need to get such an expensive cooler unless you plan to do some serious overclocking. Just get a Tuniq Tower or a Thermalright 120+. They are the best air-coolers out there and can be had for half the price. Then you can use the money you save to get a nicer graphics card.

I would and am going to get the Q6600. You dont seem to upgrade to much and it will most likely last you longer. Get some good cooling and run it around 2.7ghz or so unless you can go higher and you will not be disappointed. There have been many recent threads talking about which is better between the quads and duals and the jist of most them is that everyone multi-tasks in some way and the quads will help. Just remember that while gaming that your CPU is tasked not only with feeding the GPU, but also running the OS and all of the background programs that come with it. I was going to get a faster 4mb cache dual core after the 22nd so I could OC and get higher results then I have now, but after all the fuss lately I will be ordered a tuniq tower 120 and the Q6600 and all I really do is game. Other than the occasional editing of video, but that is few and far between. Hope this helps!

Best,

I was having the same problem. I'm planning on building myself a gaming rig in July/August, but I couldn't make up my mind which one to get, the Q6600 or the E6750. A few days ago I found a review (I can't remember where, else I'd post a link) of the E6750. It was tested and benchmarked against all the other processors in the Core 2 Duo lineup. If you're planning to to do a lot of video encoding etc, get the Q6600. However, when it came down to games, the E6750 blew the Q6600 away. Most games don't take advantage of extra cores, so when you're gaming on a Q6600 half the CPU is sitting there, idling!

Another thing. Everywhere I looked, they said the 8600 series GPU was derided as being overpriced and underperforming. Get at least a 8800GTS.

Just my 2 cents......
July 2, 2007 8:30:13 PM

If I were upgrading right now I'd go for an E6600, crucial ballistix 1066 ram and a good mobo for overclocking to the Max. Oh, and a Geforce 8800 GTS if I had to pick a card, but im holding out for the 65nm 8900's before I consider upgrading my GFX.
July 2, 2007 8:43:10 PM

Personally I dont like the quad's so much because they arent proper quads and will be waiting for AMD's REAL quad which im still expecting to be put back years, but I only upgraded 8months ago so im not too bothered.

Id actually say dual core.. you get so much more in freq. and stuff for your money.

Although Id go for one with 1066fsb rather than 1333 since it will come with a higher stock multiplier, good for overclocking.
July 2, 2007 9:17:10 PM

there is about 150 threads with E6850 vs Q6600 already.. plz use the search funktion or just go forum>cpu ..
July 2, 2007 9:25:22 PM

I dont care if it's made from 8 half cores. Who cares how it works?
I care how it performes! So if they can glue 2 chips together thats great.
I would love that they could glue even more chips together. Why cant we have 16 cores this year??

And AMDs talk about a native quad is just talk. Barcelona should be out soon but I have lost my faith. It's great on paper but how will it perform?
All I hear is bad news... something like the barcy isnt clocking well.
July 2, 2007 9:40:21 PM

I heard it was due to "incompatabilities" with the motherboards used.

AMD has kicked intel's ass quite a few times and I cant see any reason why they cant do it again. And I kinda do care how it works because it should tell ya a bit about how it performs.

What's that I smell? Maybe a...

FLAME WAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1!!!!!!!!!11!!!!!!

Anyway, you should really spend less on a CPU cooler and more on the GPU. I know a 5Ghz C2D looks appatizing, but it isn't really that much of a factor, after all, there are still people who game on socket 939 CPUs, but also with an 8800 GTX. An E2140/E2160 is indeed an affordable option, but L2 catch is an important factor in gaming that is somewhat overlooked:

I say, get an E6420 or one of the the other 20 new processors in that price range released on the 22nd, a ~$50 CPU cooler, the best 8800 series GPU your budget allows(8800 GTS 320Mb would not entirely destroy your budget), and a MUCH better PSU:

I would probably go with the dual core... Quad cores are just so useless right now. Maybe consider the e6750 for a little less and OC it.

Definitely get a better vga card. I saw a review showing the 7600GT raping the 8600.

As for this whole AMD vs. intel thing. The problem AMD is having right now is they are getting completely owned as they wait for AMD. It's just like playing a game. Lets take a FPS for example. You just killed a guy... Now you have to reload. While reloading you get hit. The question is, can you reload and start firing back before they kill you?

Just a little analogy. :p

I am going quad care for the simple fact that if you see benchmarks on this very site they are on par with or ever so slightly behind the dual cores. There are games like Crysis, Supreme Commander, etc. that will utilize quad cores right now.

Just think what the next 1-2 years will bring. You will be hoping you had that quad :)
July 3, 2007 12:44:07 AM

well I was going to just wait a little while longer for the next Geforce card to come out then just stick the 8600 in my old computer..........

That or a 8800 640mg now but I'll have to see..... I wanted to kind of wait for the next line of them and didn't want to buy 2 upper end cards as my 2nd PC won't be used as much. I was thinking about getting a 680i board and doing 2 8800's SLI but really don't know because the p35 chipset is supposed to clock better....

I am getting that cooler because I plan on over clocking and I can use it on higher end cpu's later if it works. It's got good reviews and I'd like to spend a couple extra bucks and not melt my cpu whatever it may be.
July 3, 2007 12:47:26 AM

buy the E6750 for now and OC it, then wait for the 45nm quad.
July 3, 2007 2:18:50 AM

there is no performance gain whatsoever from 1066mhz to 1333mhz.

I'd wait as intel has announced new processors coming out in the third quarter which will cause the current prices on the current processors to be slashed. I've read the dual core 3ghz processor will be 270 bucks. On top of that its the 1333mhz versions.

if you really need something now - get the quad core. It's half the price if i'm not mistaken. more bang for your buck.

No, its not better... what IS better is to buy an E6600 and set the FSB to 4x333, then overclock using that base. Way cheaper, too. Put your savings into an 8800GTS/GTX or go to a 1600x1200 monitor.
