I have the P5N32-SLI Premium/WiFi-AP board, i got the D 955 Exetreme and the E6300, what would be better for gaming?

E6300 would be even at stock (approx) but you could easily OC it to slaughter the P4D

E6300. better even at stock

how is it so much better??? Would it really slaughter it?

Would it be a good board to overclock with?

How is it better? Is this a trick question? Its faster, it runs cooler, etc. C2D kills the P4 in just about every way. You could find a benchie or two that shows the Extreme CPU on top, buy most would favor the C2D. Overclock it, and then its a slaughter.

For your cpu, you've already been given the answer. To make sure, go check toms cpu chart and you'll have the answer for just about any applications. Check this link for it, and select the E6400 (closest available, but close enough) and the PD955 on the other side. http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html

About the mobo, you've got one of the best overclocker board as far as I know. You should reach 2.5ghz without even sweating, and more then 3.0ghz with decent cooling and fan inside your case.

you can overclock E4400 with any board, fsb often stays under 333mhz.

it makes a 3 - 3.33 ghz overclock easily.

if you want to overclock with a deluxe board, at least, get a higher fsb cpu.
E6600 9x/ E6420 8x/ NOT E6320 as multi is 7x

then, at the same frequency, you'll have up to 10 % better performance in games thanks to the 4 mb total cache.

personnally, i'd take an entry-level vanilla board with e4400 and good 666mhz ram to fit with max fsb. if fsb wall exceeds 333mhz, i can lightly overclock the ram. and get around 3.4ghz.

if i wish to pay more, i might take a cpu with 4mb cache and try to clock it higher, but i prefer to wait until quads gets to a better priceand power draw.

How much better?
Try "blowing the doors off" better.
Even at stock speeds, apps such as media encoding will be faster.
For example, my E6400 encodes video more than 4x faster than my old P4 @ 3Ghz.
Just spend $10 more and get the E6400. Faster still (8x vs 7x).
Even with "stock" DDR2-667 RAM and the stock CPU fan, you can overclock the E6300/6400/6600 to 333+ Mhz FSB and put and end to which CPU is better.

I usually suggest a AMD cpu as well; just to be fair. But in this case you already have a P5N32.

I usually use the Asus or Gigabyte with a P965 or P35 (P35 is a newer chipset and more future-proof).
The p965 is mature and Asus & Gigabyte has been top builders for years.
Enthusiasts might want a Nvidia 680i

The above motherboards with good RAM will overclock well above the FSB 333

The motherboard you have now is good anyways.
If you get "into" overclocking, get GOOD Ram, as in DDR2-800 CL4 or DDR2-1066 and Micron RAM. (you need a special chart to know which RAM is Micron RAM - starts getting complex) Then you can OC over 400 Mhz.

Back to topic. The C2D is better than any P4.

Asus P5N32-SLI Premium/WiFi AP NVIDIA nForce 590 SLI or Gigabyte GA-965G-DS3? I use watercooling, i don't think there should be a problem with overclocking. I can get this for dirt cheap, i work at fry's, http://shop4.outpost.com/product/5 [...] IN_RSLT_PG. Is that RAM good enough?? What should I do with the 955E? I never used it before, I won it at Quakecon Last year with a cheap ass Gigabyte board that CANT even use it.... And on the RAM i showed, even though it is not in a kit, could i buy two of them and run in Dual Channel??

Reply to ddukesterman

Yes, that is perfectly good RAM to use. Patriot is actually very good. Get 2 of those and run them in dual chaneel, you should be able to.

My DS3 has been good so far for 6 months. Nice overclocking ability on it also. Id say get it if you dont neeed SLi

Go with the c2d (e6300), board OCs well, RAM looks nice, sound good to go to me... I assume your PSU is good enough to handle a water loop and some oc'ing?

You could probably throw the Pentium D in either board... if you wanted to save some cash and not buy a new processor right off the bat. The Gigabyte board is a renowned fantastic overclocker, and a little cheaper; and the Asus offers some more features. I would take the Gigabyte, but its up to you; depends on whether or not you want those extra features and a lil less good of an overclocking board.

could i get 3.0 GHz with the E6300 on the Asus board?

Reply to ddukesterman

Yes, easily. Make sure you have good cooling though.

Reply to AdamJ

E6300 will smoke it and it will probably go to well over 3.0 Ghz on your asus board. Just review the OCin core 2 guide.

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/ [...] quads-dual s-guide

that should help. Just make sure you have good cooling, and with a PD 955EE you probably do have good cooling...
