I'm interested in building a new computer because the computer I'm using right now is 5-6yrs old. I'm thinking about getting the 7900gs video card with AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Brisbane 2.5GHz, I would get the c2d but I don't know how to overclock so I'll just play it safe with the amd x2. My budget is around $500-$600. Can anyone please recommend me a decent motherboard to go with it?

Not sure if this is the system I would go with but its certainly better then a 5-6 year old set up. I personally would go with an Intel Duo Core, which if you wait till the 22nd of July will be a lot cheaper and a system with that could possible beat this set up.

Since that only 525, and you wanted a better video card I'd spent the extra 75 on upgrading the video card to something like this:

or of course if you went over budget by a good 60-70 you could get a this one that you could do some serious gaming on.

However, if gaming isn't what the computer is going to be for, use the extra cash on more memory and/or a better cpu.

This is a nice board and MSI makes it really easy to update drivers and BIOS
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16813130050 $72

If you can go the extra $, this is a nice 570 ASUS http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16813131022 $105

You could also save going with the X2 4200 and not take a big performance hit http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103741 $85

Check out the chart to compare the CPUs
http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html?modelx=33&model1=466&model2=469&chart=170

For gaming your best off saving on the mobo and CPU and putting the money into a video card.

Suggestions:

CPU: AMD Athlon X2 4200+

Mobo: Asus M2N-E

RAM: OCZ Gold 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2-800

Video Card: eVGA Geforce 8600GT

Power Supply: Enermax Liberty 500W

Total before taxes and shipping: $574.95

I would have suggested a C2D anyway, but it would have put you over budget.

I agree with everything here except the video card, I would only consider that card as a cupholder to be honest.

Use everything but change the video card to this:

SAPPHIRE 100186L Radeon X1950XT 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 VIVO HDCP Video Card - Retail

The X1950XT does make a bit more sense, but I suggested the 8600GT to keep it more within the OP's budget. He hasn't stated what exactly will be done with this system, and if it is gaming, what games he/she intends to be playing.

oh well that's fine didn't mean anything bad to you, just that I have a grudge against the midrange Dx10 (8500, 8600, HD2400, HD2600) because they are just such a big let down. There are very few cases where I would recommend them (usually recommend 7900GS, X1950Pro, and mostly X1950XT on this price point)
