Hi,

thinking to upgrade from a 6600GT (core 525 / mem 1050 128mb ddr3) sometime soon, although since i'm not in a hurry i might do it at the end of summer. I would like to go for nvidia so please keep that in mind).

I'm thinking of:

1) GAINWARD BLISS 7600GT 7852 PCI-E 256MB GS GLH
(560/1400 256mb ddr3) for around $25 less than the one below

2) XFX GEFORCE 7600GT FATAL1TY PVT73GU1D4 256MB PCI-E
(650/1600 256mb ddr3)

3) a 8600gt for around the same amount of $$ as the above

4) EVGA GF7900GS KO 256MB PCI-E (500/1380 256mb ddr3 256-bit)
for around $35+ more

5) XFX GEFORCE 7900GS PVT71PUDD 600MHZ 256MB PCI-E
(600/1600 256mb ddr3 256-bit) for around $15 more than above.

My setup: Am2 X2 4600+, 1gb ram, 1hdd, 1 optical, PSU is a vanilla 450w one, running on xp pro 32-bit (no plans at all for Vista for 3+years)

Which one is worth spending money for?

I assume that the 8600gt would last longer but my primary concern is compatibility with older dx8 and even dx7 games besides the dx9 ones i play & will be playing mainly. I think i read something about problems of that sort with the new 8xxx series, is that right?
If yes, then maybe a 7900gs is my best bet?

i would probably look at getting a 8800gts320

however out of the choice given i would go with the 7900gs or a 1950 pro

on a side note i would look at boosting that powersupply to a known brand before you play around with the GPU

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate it.

so you think the 7900gs is worth the extra money compared to the rest? (and which 7900gs of the two?)

I'd also appreciate it if more people would chime in...

If you are going for the 7900 I would suggest the EVGA card, can't offer any reason other then the company, the have great customer service. Perhaps someone else could offer more though?

For the price a 1950 Pro would be my choice. Also 1950xt is showing up at a pretty cheap price.8800 series on the nvidia side are awesome but 8600 and 8500 suck IMO.A better PSU is a good idea probably as well as another gig of ram.

Thank you for the replies so far.

so far, i suppose 7900 looks like a better idea?

Since noone mentioned the compatiility issue with older games (under dx8 and dx7), should i assume there is none?

Reply to wondernote

nope none that im aware of

whats you r max budget by the way that way we will be able to give you some more accurate advice

I would just like to point out (to avoid confusion) that the compatibility issue (if any) that i am wondering about concerns the 8xxx series and not the 7900. So, are there any issues with older (dx7 & dx8) games under xp pro 32 bit? (i think i read about issues but maybe that was under vista...?)

About budget, i'm in a different country right now and prices are diferent here that's why i listed the models along with the price differences to give you a better picture: i looked around a lot and the options i list in my first message seem to be the ones i might go for (to give you an idea, 8800gts 320 start at $120 more than the XFX 7900gs). What i don't know is how much more money it's worth spending in relation to the difference i'll see from my 6600gt. Of course i'd like to go for the XFX 7900gs but it's the most expensive option. I don't know if the 7600gt (and which of the 2?) is a better choice.

honestly i would wait until you can afforrd the 8800 as that is amazing but not knowing your situation i dont know how long that will take

other than that i would just get the 7900gs and be happy oh and go with the cheaper one.

in re to the problems i have heard nothing of the sort this is the first i have heard of it do you have any links to articles about it?

get this $120 x1950pro http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814102061
its a great card, ahve 2 of them in my lan party rig, i don't get any heating problems, should work fine on your powersupply too.

Regarding the 8800 (since the performance difference does not justify the price difference (+$120), does it?) i think (could be wrong) that saving the money and getting a 7900gs instread will be better in the long run (with the saved money it will be easier to upgrade to a better card when dx10 is mature while in the meantime the 7900gs should be not THAT far from it (8800) in current dx9 games performance-wise. Am i completely off here?

So you think it's worth it to spend the money for a 7900gs instead of a 7600gt?

Why the cheaper 7900gs of the 2? The XFX one is OC'd (almost GT) and is only around $15-$20 more. I would have thought it's a much better deal... :|

Regarding to the problems, unfortunately i don't have something specific in mind, it's just an impression i got from reading around... but then my memory might be playing games with me, that's why i wanted to ask here...

If my memory serves me correctly the 8800 GTS doubles the 7900 GS (at least at low res) and the difference gets bigger the higher you go.

I don't know; you can check the VGA charts.

Reply to Ananan

You could be right, but i think 8800 is overkill for me right now for several reasons.
7600gt-7900gs is as far as i can go.

Any more advice?
Yakyb, could you respond to my last message?

Reply to wondernote

to be honest it all depends on the games you play and th resolution that you play at however i always like to try to push the boat out a little when buying components.

a quick look at the VGA charts shows that with a 7600GT your likely to double your current performance where as a 7900gs is likely to triple your current performance.

again as i said i would try to get the cheaper 7900gs (as it is very easy to overclock yourself) considering you are already spending a little more.

teh reason i suggest this is that with crysis on the way im not really sure how a 7600 would do whilst a 7900 should be okay.

i dont like the idea of incrementle upgrading i.e get a 7600whilst you save to get 8800 as all that does is leave you a bit short changed.

i would personnally look to flog the 6600 on ebay and then get what you can afford.

thats what i did...sold my 7800GS for the same price as a new x1950 pro...and bought that

Ok, so everyone thinks it's better not to go for a 7600gt but a 7900gs out of all the options i listed and paying the extra money for it?

Reply to wondernote

Let's put things a little bit in perspective:
(X1950PRO)>XFX7900GS>EVGA 7900GS>8600GT>7600GT Fatality>Gainward 7600GT
I've added the 1950PRO because it is worth considering. For gaming you should go with either of the first two, otherwise get the 8600GT since it's cheaper and supports dx10. Why i wouldn't get a cheap 7900GS because they're near EOL and no matter the guarantee in a year you will want to upgrade and i'm guessing it will be easier to sell an 8600 gt than a 7900 gs (just as it's easier now to sell a 7600GT than a 6800GT).
