I have a 2001 Mitsubishi Diamond WS-55907 "HD Upgradeable" 55" Big
Screen. What do I need to add to view HDTV on it? Will a DirectTV HD
Satellite Tuner be sufficient, or do I need to add something else? The
term "HD Upgradeable" throws me. Thanks, ted

That is all you need. HD upgradeable means that if you have a source that
can output an HD signal using component outputs, the set can use it. It
does not have the ATSC tuner built in, but you don't need it if you have the
DirectTV STB, which will allow you to receive HD sat transmissions as well
as HD OTA.

Isn't that one of the Mitsu's that used their proprietary RGB interface? I
don't think you can use normal component inputs, let alone anything that
came later. You need that "promise card" conversion first. Working off
memory here, so confirm or deny.

There was nothing proprietary about Mitsubishi's 1080i component input.
They did have extra H & V inputs for discrete sync on this and other sets,
which was never used. The Promise Module also had a proprietary serial
interface for sets that could be upgraded to use HAVI, IEEE1394, and 5C. In
order to get those features you needed that interface, but the component
inputs worked just like any other set.

What was the purpose of the "Promise Card"? Was that something needed
for On Air HD? ( i have some distant recollection of Mitsu wanting to
sell me a $1000 add-on after we had the set about a year). Thanks, ted

This is from Mitsubishi regarding the Promise Module and these early sets:
The Promise
We will engineer and manufacture the upgrades necessary so the
HD-upgradeable television you purchase today can be made compatible with
near-future advances in digital television and digital interconnectivity.
Specifically, we promise that you will be able to have your television
upgraded, at a reasonable cost, to include an off-air HDTV tuner, a cable TV
tuner (for unscrambled programming), an IEEE1394 (FireWire®) connection,
HAVi system control and 5C copy protection.
This was an attempt by Mitsubishi to assure early adopters that they would
not be buying products that would son be obsolete. Many were offended by
the high price ($1000, installed) of the promise module. What people failed
to realize is that the module was NOT needed for many applications. Many
users already have an ATSC tuner in a STB. The module provided
interconnectivity that was otherwise not available. Mitsubishi was an early
proponent of IEEE1394 and had the rest of the industry jumped on, we would
have some really cool options for signal distribution that we don't at this
point.

Hi there, in Feb 2001 we bought a 55857 Mits. HDTV. 55". To this day I'm
delighted with it. With the latest Time-Warner 8300 HD receiver, the HD
picture is superb. Well, my aunt just bought (with my advice) a Mits. DLP
TV, 50", and on that the picture is some sharper than mine for sure, but I
have no regrets. For the next 5 years I don't see a need to get a newer TV.
I don't miss the HDMI input, as the component input gives a superb picture.
I use the optical out from the receiver into my home stereo system and that
works fine.
Interestingly, when I had Dish network for a year using their 811 receiver,
I had to use two outs; a component HD out and an S-Video out for watching SD
(standard-def) channels because those channels looked pretty awful with the
HD input. Whereas with the 8000 series receivers from T-W, the digital input
is just as good for HD and SD. The 811 had only audio out though so I simply
had to use the optical out to listen to the sound from my home stereo
whether I used the HD or SD input.

WOW! I connected my WS-55907 to a DirectTV provided HD STB and the
picture is phenomenal! Thanks to all of you for the advice.
btw: The DirectTV Tech told me that although the current HD DirectTV
uses a four coax feed from the antenna, that DirectTV will be adding
additional service soon and that will require two more coax from the
dish (for a total of 6). Since I had to pull cable for this I pulled a
bundle of 7 coax for this (one spare in case of a bad cable).
