One of the channels I watch only broadcasts over satellite during certain
hours, mainly news in the morning, noon, and supper time. If I leave the TV
on to this channel, it will go blank once the station stops using the
satellite.
Also, my satellite service has a number of radio stations which have music
but no video.
I'm curious: is the video power on during these periods? On my current set
(a DV Sony Trinitron CRT) I see a slight glow to the screen compared to when
it's actually off.
Specifically, I'm wondering about my planned micro-display HDTV (probably
either lcd or ILA). Will the lamp still be burning up its limited allotment
of hours while I'm listening to music over the satellite?

Yes, the tube is waiting for a video signal and all components are at the
ready as the set is on. AFAIK, a TV don't have the "sleep mode" we see with
our computer screens. If you want the audio only, why not insert a pair of
Y-connectors and run the second line to your A/V receiver and listen to the
DBS audio with the tube off, when not needed for video or turning.
YMMV

Yup, the lamp is still burning. Think of the mirror in DLP or the LCD in LCD
projection as a shutter that turns off (black) so that light doesn't get
thru. The lamp is still running.
