I'm putting together a Q6600 build, and I'm trying to save some money. I just bought two 120mm case fans, and I was wondering if with that additional cooling whether or not a case with a more temp conscious design can be less of a priority, or if two case fans won't make much of a difference?
without testing it is hard to tell. The best case cooling will keep the temp inside the case the same as the ambient temp. 2 -.120 mm fans should do a pretty good job.
To test your case cooling open the side of your case and place a window fan blowing in. If the temp is lower with the window fan than with the cover on, then your case cooling can be improved, if the temp doesn't go down then your case cooling is as good as it can get and your CPU cooler needs to be better.
If your case has built in fan guards with the little holes or slots, you are wasting more than 50% of your fan output. Cut them out and replace them with the barbecue grill type. like this http://www.svc.com/finguargril.html Fans in the front that are hidden behind the front cover should have no guards.Even though the fans will put out more, they will be quieter, because the more flow will make a DC fan turn slower.
I have also seen many case with poor design that acually have no way for outside air to get to the front fans. This can be corrected by cutting a hole in the front cover at the bottom where it can't be seen.
