Lightning Strike:is it possible

I had a friend bring in a dead computer,and possible monitor after a lightning strike, determing the mother board was fried i wanted to see if the monitor was ok. I hooked it up to one of my test machines and after i got into windows i heard a loud pop through the speakers and the screen went blank as well as the lights on the front of the computer(power and hard drive) but the power supply fan was still running. i then unhooked the power cord and tried to turn the power back on and only the fan would run. i hooked up another monitor and it tried to boot and then went blank again.Is there a way to check the output of the monitor, i am afraid to hook this thing up to another machine and loose it also.
