If the BIOS reports drives as IDE, it is easier to install windows. Load the motherboaed drivers then check in Device Manager the transfer mode and test with HdTach and HdTune.
Google is your friend. Both programs will test your drive performance! Checking DMA depends on chipset. Open drive controller in device manager, possibly Advanced tab.
with IDE mode you need NO drivers and the performance is the same with the exception of NcQ(Not much benefits to most users here....)
Hope into the device manager with Start => run then copy this "devmgmt.msc" into the open line and hit enter
now go under IDE ATA/ARAPI controllers and look in all primary secondary under advanced for "ULTRA DMA"'s you should have a ultra DMA 2(or 3 in some cases...pioneer anyone) for your ODD(more if you have more)
If thats all you have in there then your drives are running in SATA.
then go look down under "SCSI and RAID controllers"
and select your controller in my case "Intel ............Controller". Under details you can see a drop down and select Bus Relations and see all drives on it. Do not be alarmed when you see IDE sata is backwards compatible with IDE. IF your drives are here they are in SATA
DAMN PIC HAS REMOVE...OPPSY
Bus shows similar my bad
For Sata 150 or 300 use the software that comes with the controller
For Intel - Matrix Storage Manager(it will also alert you to a failing drive with time to get a backup done)
Others have similar software.
Dont let anyone fool you sata is not faster then IDE as hard drives are still under the max speed for both.
Post back with your results

Ok I went into the device manager and on of the primary (there were 2 of each) and secondary since I have 2 HDD's it was showing Ultra DMA 5 for both of them.
When I went to SCSI and Raid Controllers I selected Gigabyte GBB36X (my mobo is the DS3). When I go to details and it has device instance ID, it shows PCI\VEN_197B&DEV2363SUBSYS_B0001458&REV_02\4&A678335&0&00E3. When I put bus relations i get SCSI\\Cdrom&Ven_Lite-On&Prod_DVDRW_SHM-165H6s&Rev_HS06\5&3063afa 3&0&000.
When I installed all parts, I used the Gigabyte CD and when I first was loaded all drivers when I built my machine a few people said I didnt have to do anything becayse SATA doesnt use jumpers. The DS3 uses SATA II 3. The 2 HDD's I got were OEM also.
well it looks like ure in IDE mode for your drives(or they would be under scsi and raid. as far as i know)
and a SATA DVD? or emulated DVD?
If you want the drives on SATA(there is little to no gain tho) you need to tell the bios to run in sata/raid(ACHI in some cases). I am not sure how windows will react to this change.
Also note your board seems to have another sata controller(the gigabyte one purple?) and the intel one(orange?).

I dont have a Sata DVD. It's a regular IDE DVD-R-RW dual layered lightscribe. Why is my DVD under SCSI? IN device manager in SCSI and Raid controllers Gigabyte GBB36X is there. Clicking on it and in details tab it shows PCI\VEN_197b&DEV_2363&SUBSYS_B0001458&REV_02\4&A678335&0& ;00E3. Bus relations its showing the DVDRW I typed previously. In Intel ICH8 2 port Serial ATA Storage COntroller-2825, i shows in bus relations PCIIDE\IDECHANNEL\4$20f4dc72&0&0 and the same below it (so its written twice). In Intel ICH8 4 port Serial ATA Storage COntroller 2820 in Bus Relations it showind PCIIDE\IDEChannel\4&227b4d2c&0&0 (written twice).
(Is this why whenever I try to install my games on my other hard drive it unchecks itself before I can choose the alternate drive instead of the default c: drive? or something totally different?)

Sorry for the long wait to reply...
looks like there was NO ide port on your board so gigabyte put in a third part controller. those can show up under scsi/raid
Is that a P35 board? Intel has NO more IDE on there new chipsets/south bridge combos....
As for you games...i dont quite get what you are saying....
Its the 965p-DS3 mobo. It should have an IDE port, only IDE is the DVDRW. I took out the floppy and only have one DVDRW.
Games: When I built this system last summer, I bought 2 OEM WD SATAII hard drives. I was planning on using one for all my drivers of components (DVDRW, SOundcard, keyboard/mouse, monitor, videocard, OS), and put all my games on the other hard drive. This didnt work because even though both hard drives were formated and put to NTFS file system, the "c" drive allowed me to place all the components on the drive. When I went to install my first game on the "e:" drive (2nd hard drive), I went to change the path from "c" to "e" and i did that but it would uncheck itself if I typed in the path including the name of the game.
Does the E: drive show correctly in Disk Manager? I install games on my D: drive, I just change the C to a D in the destination path. Some poorly written installers give problems, but that is a bug in that installer.
Yes the E: drive is there ( I named it my games cause I tend to have brains farts and forget lol). It shows 234GB available and in NTFS file system. My DVDRW is the d: drive, if I changed the destination to d: would the installer give me an error window for loading it onto the d: drive which is the DVDRW?
