Hey guys, I recently built my second system and am experiencing a very odd bug with my Hard Drive..
PLAN:
-The new computer has a 500gig SATA HD..
-Im trying to move an older 160gig IDE HD into this new system
RESULTS:
The BIOS doesn't pick up anything under Primary IDE (Master/Slave) or Secondary IDE (Master/Slave)
However after moving the jumper to Master and using the master end of the IDE cable it was discovered in My Computer after booting up.. Windows XP then prompted about new devices found and installed some software that required a reboot.
After doing so the drive is no longer in My Computer, I can't seem to get the computer to recognize it. What happened and how can I fix this?! THANKS!
Check all the connection are secure and that the BIOS is set up to recognize the ATA drive. If this doesn't fix it, go to Administrative Tools in the control pane, Computer Management, Disk Management and see if it's shown and has a drive letter.
G-paw, the drive does not show up in disk management, after messing around with the jumpers on the HD I can successfully boot up the system and the D drive is found, however when I restart it no longer registers.
Like I said I have a SATA HD already in, and this HD is on the IDE cable by itself, and for some reason it doesn't show up.
Supreme Law - the drive is not showing up in Disk Management to even partition. My motherboard is an MSI P6N SLI Platinum
Hope this helps, i really appreciate you guys taking the time to help me!
Looks like you have to PATA connections on the board. Try making the drive the Master and plug it into the first, front one facing them, and your optical drive to the second connector and have it set to Master as well. Be sure to use top connector on each of the data cables. If one of the cables is designated for the optical drive, be sure to connect it to the optical drive I boot with the optical drive disconnected just to see if this fixes it, unlikely but worth a try. Make sure the SATA with Windows on it is set as the first boot drive in the BIOS. What's really strange is that the drive is recognized but then it isn't on a reboot.
