Hi, I have a 500Gb Samsung IDE harddisk. It shows up as 130Gb only on Windows 2000. It shows up correctly on Linux Ubuntu. How do I ensure that I get access to full 500 GB on Windows.. Pls advise

update to sp4 and do all the patches, also make sure your mobo supports it, also, check disk management, because there may only be one 127gb partition but the rest of the drive be still unpartitioned because of the limits of fat32, so try ntfs too (look up on google a guide for converting fat to ntfs, then use disk management to resize the partition)

1) windows is already updated with sp4
2) mobo supports needs to be verified
3) cannot possibly be a filesystem issue, since even if i delete all partitions, the disk info in disk management shows the drive's max capacity as 130GB. This is even before we format any partition or for that matter even create any partition.
4) The drive is properly detected in ubuntu linux..

I think perhaps its a windows 2000 issue.. maybe it is not capable of handling drives of this size.

Also if i try to access the drive from windows explorer, it gives the following error message:
"The drive is unformatted. Do you wish to format it"

hmm.. windows 2000 unpatched doesn't support drives bigger than 127gb, but patched it does... also, go into disk management in win2k and right click the disk and see if large disk support is enabled.

you'll need to fdisk the drive and enable LBA , reformat to full capacity
