So basically, I bought a 170 Opteron, over a X2 4200 for my skt939 Av8 board.
From what I heard on many forums is that the 170 Opteron overclocks very well for various reasons. I have upgraded from a 3500 Venice, which was overclocked to 2.7ghz on air (Zalman CNPS7000B-Cu).
That scored 31 seconds in super pi, where as my 170 Opteron scored 40 on stock.
My ram is corsair Pc3200 DDR400 2-2-2-5, which is stable at DDR500 2.5-3-3-7, it can also reach DDR600, but with very loose timings.
My 170 Opteron will not past 2.2ghz stable, im writing this post while its at 2.5ghz, but it cant run super pi let alone Prime95. I've increased the vcore up to 1.6volts which sounds stupid tbh as other people are overclocking it to 2.8ghz with 1.4volts.
Also I was under the impression the multiplier could go above 10..
You wouldn't, by any chance, be using an Asus Motherboard, and don't have the floppy drive enabled in the Bios?
I came up against this issue just this weekend, on an NF4 by Asus. Opty 170, same memory as you, looks like. Mine would work wonderfully until 2.36 ghz, where it wouldn't post. Enabled the floppy drive in the Bios (I don't have one), and away I went without trouble.
Leaning towards memory being the issue. Just remember what worked with your other processor wont necessarily work with a different one due to the memory controller being on the processor. Some can be quite finicky. Theres really no way it should be hitting a wall @ 2.2ghz. Put the ram on a divider with some reasonably loose timings and see what happens.
