Newbie after OC 8600gt using ntune

I have a budget sparkle 8600gt and wish to over clock it from its standard speeds of 540mhz core and 1400mhz memory. Ive done away with the standard cooler as it was to noisey and have a zalman VF700 cooler.

Is it alright to use ntune to start clocking the card and how high can i safely go without causing any permanent damage??

ntune should be fine. clock as high as you want. if its cool then go for it. if you start getting artifacts then turn down the clock a little. just be sure that its stable and make sure you watch the temps.
