Hi...one of my Geforce 7800 GTXs broke recently and I want to replace it.

I was wondering what would be better: one 8800 or two 7800s?

They're 256's. So one 8800 GTS 320 will be better than two 7800 GTX 256s? I want to make absolutely sure before I buy anything.

one card is better than two. you wili have less heat and maybe you could get second 8800 in few months and create a monster :)

(edit: i guess the urls arent pasting correctly, i had chosen dark messiah of might and magic at 1280x1024 & 1600x1200, 4xAA 8xAF)

2 7800GTXs in sli will still only have a combined memory amount of 256MB, plus sli is really only beneficial when running at higher resolutions than what i listed... ...they dont have the 320MB 8800GTS listed, but the 640MB version listed offers virtually the exact same performance as it till about 1600x1200 res (under DX9), when the larger memory buffer starts to have a greater impact on the overall performance, due to the increased resolution

by the looks of it, even a single 8800GTS 320 will offer greater performance than a pair of 7800GTX 256s in SLI (which usually only offer ~20-30% improvement above a single card)

You can be assured, the 256 is 20 to 25% < than the 512, which is only slightly better than the GTS. I own a 320GTS and its nice, you wont go wrong

I quite enjoy my 7950 GX2,but I am still considering an 8800GTS 640 or the GTX if I can afford it.But ya,I recommend the 8800GTS,but the 640 version more so than the 320.As other have pointed out the issues relating to higher resolutions and memory, one day you'll have that 30in.wide screen LCD,and you'll need the 640 v.just to have decent frame rates.640 is better, but 8800GTX with 768 megz of memory is way better.Goodluck.
