Greetings,
I hadn't used my computer's CD for a while and I now noticed that they wouldn't work. I went to my device driver and it gives me the error message below. I followed the troubleshooter's suggestion by uninstalling and reinstalling the two cd roms that are now nonfunctioning, but during the reinstallation it said there was a problem and they may not work. Which I found was correct when I went back to the device manager. They are there in body, but not in spirit (ick)

"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"

I have a pentium4/ 3.2ghz with 2gb of ram 80gb hard drive 0 160gb hard drive 1 video card Radeonx300running windows xp home.

By the way, I tried to connect a usb cd rom unit and it gives the same error, won't even let me in by the back door, with a workaround.(ha)
I'm disabled so I'm hoping the problem is easily fixable. Thanks in advance for any assistance, I have searched/read some of the posts that are similiar but not quite so I thought I would just come and ask.
Regards,
Pipsywiggins

Is there anyone who can point me in the right direction on the reason my CD ROMs just quit being recognized one day? The physically power up, but are not seen in the file explorer with a drive letter.
The error response given in the device manager indicates there is a registry problem.
I need to figure this out as I am unable to have any use of CDROM products.
Thank you

Am I posting this wrong, or any reason for non-response? I am a frequent reader here, but as I am no expert, don't usually have the opportunity to reply .

If I understand correctly, you have two CDrom or DVD drives which neither is working right now?

I would have guessed that you had a Jumper setting master/slave issue at first, but then you added the helpful tidbit about the usb drive not working. That baffles me. ( Just btw, did you just add a second hard drive?)

Do you have another PC box that you can examine the optical (cd,dvd, etc.) drives in?

and

Have you tried a good old system restore?

Sometime with hardware conflicts can be resolved by loading the last known good configuration, this is different from a system restore and you must do it when you are booting the PC. It's an option that can be chose with the same process as booting into safe mode. Here is a link to a page with directions.

Your problem sounds like a strange one, maybe even the result of a virus.
Good Luck.

Sounds like you have corrupt hi/low filter settings in your registry
this should fix that problem:

Are you running Vista? (I'm not bashing it, I enjoy it)

I had the same problem because I installed an uncertified driver (the only one available) for a printer. You might uninstall any recent drivers or do a system restore to see if it is a software problem and not a hardware problem

Hope it helps

edit: It was only 2 internal drives (didn't try my usb drive )
