Which do you guys think will make for the best upgrade path... buying a e6600 and p35 motherboard now and then jumping to peryn later, or amd 6000 am2 motherboard and then jumping to barcalona later. Also in each of these cases how important will it be to upgrade ram as well would either quad still work ok if you keep the original ram.

IMO Intel is safer bet atm. Get Q6600 though ;) If price is important, E6550 is way cheaper and has similar speed as older E6600.

I would agree Intel appear to be a safer bet right now, but that could all change very soon after Barcelona et al reaches the market. The best advice I was ever given (a long time ago that I still see sometimes today is) - buy the best you can with what you have now. For me right now that is a top of the line Intel based system.

If you buy a very good quad core now, you might not even see value in upgrading it when Penryn comes out anyway. My nearly 1 year old E6600 won't be going anywhere anytime soon. Only now that I am doing folding at home am I even half using the power of this thing. Oh and it's acting as a full time server. Also playing 3D games while doing everything else. Email on all the time. About 20 firefox tabs. Messanging programs. Hmmm, nope, won't be upgrading as it still flys along lol.

Sorry if that got OT.

I've been trying to decide the same thing. I've been using my Athlon 64 3000 for the past 3 or 4 years now. Based on what I've read, it sounds like the Penryn cpu is going to continue to dominate AMD's offerings. So then you should wait a week or two for the new Core 2s to come out and then maybe upgrade in the winter. The Athlon 64 X2s are tempting since they're so cheap, but the Core 2s seem too good to pass up on.

Personally, I think I'm going to wait until winter to see how the AMD/Intel battle plays out since there's really no compelling reason to upgrade right now until some games start coming out that are worth getting a new computer for. I'll decide for sure next week.

My vote is go cheap right now, like the 6320 and o/c. Wait for Nehalem when a system upgrade is required.

------------------------------ Vista=W98se...LOL just say no to scripts, and ActiveX controls at the right time. You guess when.

The iPhone's battery is soldered into place. Thats OK if you drop it, it won't fall out. How much will it cost to swap?
