I'm presently using 2G Mushkin DDR1 in my Abit IC7 Max3, works fine. I just ordered a Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R which takes a DDR2. Question: can the DDR1 fit or be used at all on the new board? Forget about performance, mainly useability in case of suspected new memory problems.

No, sorry. That board uses either DDR2 or DDR3. I think asrock make a few boards that take either DDR1 or DDR2 though if that's any use. Depends what you want the board to be able to do though, i.e. which CPU you're using, etc
