So just got my new system running installed and good to go. i have a E6750 with a Thermalight 120 Ultra and a Zalmann 120mm 1000rpm fan attached to it.

I noticed while today while doing a wee bit of testing that the cores when idle sit at 25-30 C and when at full load they go up to 45-50 C. Does this sound right? I thought the cores under load especially with a Thermalight 120 Ultra woulda been lower, and i havent even overclocked it yet.

Is it possible its not got a good bond or the greese that came with it is crap? What ya guys think?

Your idle scores are pretty good, while your may be higher what one might expect it's really not that bad. I would firstly attribute it to the fan, at only 1000rpm a 120mm fan doesn't put enough pressure on the denser fin layout on the Ultra 120. While i think your fan and Ultra 120 mount is perfectly fine, and you'll be able to overclock that cpu nicely, i bet you get a noticeable decrease in temperatures with a better performing fan.

Agreed. It does seem the fan is the culprit. I would also bet that your room temperatures are fairly high, as well.

However, I would like to make note that you will see your temps lower by a few degrees as the thermal compound sets. Regardless, your temperatures are good, and not in the danger area.

If your load temps stay under 50 your golden!! I had to lapp my CPU AND HS to get a 9-10C drop in temp to get under 50C. I was running close to 60C before I lapped.

did you guys OC to super fast speed? I only OC the E6750 to 3.2GHz (FSB 400) and the CPU is around 37-39°C, 100% load running Prime95. Measurement was done using the 2 software mentioned in the OC guideline I found here as well as Gigabyte's own monitoring software.

I am getting ready to build a similar set up ( e6750, ultra-120 extreme and scythe s-flex sff21d fan + Arctic silver 5), but I noticed that the bottom of my HS is not very flat. I am getting a gap of about 1-2 mil in some areas. I contacted thermalright about this and they said "The base is normal situation. Take it easy and use it. After test, you
will be satisfied with U-120 extreme's performance." How was your base? Was it fairly flat or did it also have 1-2 mil gaps?

Also, any opinions from anyone regarding lapping? That is, should I lap it or RMA it back and hopefully get a better unit?

Thanks,

Stan

Well if you have no problem lapping it just lap it, it will definitely give you the performance that the 120e would give you. If you RMA you'd probably end up with one slightly better but still would need to be better.
