One of my friends has AT&T DSL and has been complaining about his slow internet. He was wondering since he as a REALLY old router(like a couple of years old), would a new one speed up his internet a little?

1) Is the ISP Cable or ADSL ?
2) Is friend using wireless ?

If cable try bypassing the router and using an ethernet cable to connect computer direct to modem supplied by ISP.

If wireless, try plugging computer direct to router by ethernet.

You should then be able to figure out where the bottleneck is.

If using wireless -- change channels, especially if you can detect neighbouring wifi. Try raising the router above furniture level. Relocate AV sender or cordless phone base away from computer or router.

Chances are, unless the speed provided by the ISP is in excess of 11mpbs
(that's the actual speed not the "up to" speed claimed in adverts) there will be no improvement by changing wireless router from an older model unless it's a wireless range/reception/interference issue that cannot be solved by the above tips.

I'm in a similar situation, but my wireless speed hasn't changed. I'm using a at&t 2wire gateway which is about 6-7 years old and the only times my connection speed varies are; 1) when too many people are connected to it: 2) when something is wrong with my computer (virus, registry, adapter, etc.).

Basically, getting a new router might help, but if the problem is with your computer or if someone just ended up hijacking his signal, he'll just waste his money and time.
