I just downloaded a file from www.videolan.org that contains software that successfully reads video files played on my Sony NEC Optiarc 7170A DVD reader/writer.
   
This file apparently contains a bunch of other drivers. And it's free.  
   
So altho my computer will not autoplay a DVD inserted into this drive, I nevertheless can play it. Just thought others would like to be aware of this.
