How do I shrink my vista screen size

my desktop picture is bigger (the screen isn't big enough to show the whole picture) and all the icons are larger. Everything is in the same proportion but just bigger. Everything was fine until a couple of nights ago. I don't know what or if I did anything, but I can't get it back to what it was.

Right click the deskop
Properties
Settings
Change the option called "Screen Resolution"
Move to the right for smaller appearance
