Hard drive restarts computer upon writing

I just purchased a Hitachi 7K1000 1TB SATA drive for my desktop (which already has a main hdd that I use for windows). The new hard drive installed fine and windows sees the drive, but every time I try to write to the drive (whether its trying to format it [both quick and regular], remove a partition, or add a file) the drive makes some low pitched noises (i think, that might be normal?) and about 15 seconds later makes either my computer restart or freeze on me.

I'm running windows xp x64 professional. All my motherboard drivers and firmware (nforce4 chipset) are up to date. What could be the problem?

Hi. I've also tried one of these HDD with Windows and had no problems.
It could be that the disk got damaged before you got it? Hitachi have a disk diagnostics on their WWW site. Look at the Drive Fitness Test
at http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm?linkto=QL

No harm in trying it.
