I've never even seen the price for HD service on any of their price
sheets. They mention this or that, but not what the totals are.

Nothing on their website the last time I looked either.

Yeah right, like my history of talking to them has ever been
satisfying.

I love these big companies that couldn't care less about business.

I have a Sony KDF 50WE655 and I just plug the cable into the back of the TV
scan and get all the HD stations that aren't encrypted, this includes all
the locals +ESPN.

This won't work. Over the Air ATSC uses the 8-VSB modulation method.
This is the only thing your OTA HDTV tuner knows how to demodulate.
Digital Cable, both standard and high-definition, however, uses QAM-256
(quadrature amplitude) modulation.

There are dozens of other important differences, but this is the most
critical.

I just called them recently about this. If you have standard analog
expanded service, then it costs $10 more a month to get HDTV ($5/month
for the set-top box/tuner, and $5 a month for basic HDTV service, and
you don't get any of the HDTV programming that is only available with
their standard-definition cable service.

If, however, you have a standard-definition digital cable plan, then if
you want HDTV, you only have to pay $5 more a month from Comcast, for
the tuner rental. You also get more programming, because you get the HD
versions of a few of the channels which are available only via the
standard-definition digital cable package.

It's complicated.

Yeah, that's because your KDF-50WE655 can demodulate and decode
QAM-modulated FTA (free to "air", i.e. unencrypted) channels by default.
Expect to see more of this in the very near future.

I thought it was on their web site. $5/month for the HD service (you get a
new box) or for $9.95 you can get the dual-tuner PVR and the HD service is
"free".

There might be install fees also.

I could get the local HD channels by plugging the cable directly into my
Sharp LC-32GD4U LCD.

I think the SIR-T351 demodulates both 8-VSB and QAM.

My similar SIR-T451 gets the local HD channels (except FOX and UPN)
from Comcast.

SIR-T351 does not support QAM. This explains why I do not recv any HD
channals.

It must also have an 8-VSB tuner as well because I get (with a little luck
and no real antenna) OTA HD stations in my area. I believe with a proper
antenna I could many of the Hartford and NYC stations giv

Just to clarify, when you say:

> default.

You mean "QAM-modulated FTA channels sent over the cable system"

Readers who don't know what's going on might confuse "free to the air"
to mean over the air channels.
