OK, so i checked the product code on my processor and realized that i have the B3 stepping. I do not plan on overclocking (running only stock freq and voltages)...is the B3 really as bad as everyone is saying.

I am comming from an AMD 4800+ where the processor is rated for 130W, so my computer has excellent cooling (antec p-180 with Nexus 120 mm fans running at 12V. and quiet like a lamb)...should i be worried and return the processor?

The B3 is perfectly fine for you since you aren't going to oc. Everyone is excited about the G0 stepping because of it's ocing potential.

Is the B3 the current stepping, or are there other stepping numbers between B3 and G0 that a buyer needs to be aware of?

If the B3 is current, everything I've heard about these processors is that they do overclock fairly well. You made it sound as though the B3 doesn't overclock at all.

My impression is that the current Q6600 is fine for both regular use and overclocking, but that the G0 offers additional overclocking potential. Is that basically correct?

Yes, the thing is everyone wants the OC potential of the G0 stepping because it's beyond that of the B3, but it is by no means bad. (the B3 I mean)

G0 draws less power and should be a better overclock but you are just as fine with a B3.
