I'm using Vista 64 Ultimate with forceware beta 162.22 with my 8800GTS. Why? Because it's performing on par with XP.
Now if you're asking for XP, then the drivers to get are probably the Forceware beta 162.18 (I think that's the one for XP 32-bit). Why? Because they allow you to play Lost Planet without crashing.
Note: If there are newer drivers than those, then I stand corrected, because I haven't checked the Beta drivers download center in a few days.
I have an 8800 GTS 640 with XP and I am using 162.18 beta drivers. IMHO they work great. Going from 158.22(?) drivers I also doubled my fps on STALKER (45 to 90+) and I was able to max out every setting. In Oblivion I gained about 20+ fps outdoors, from 35 to 55+. Finally I was able to max out Dark Messiah multiplayer with the Ntune override AA 16Q and still run 50 + fps. I also improve my 3Dmark06 score by about 150 points
