I am going to be running virtual servers ( Windows 2003 Sever 32bit ) and I want to know whether I should use quad core or dual core Xeons? I am thinking of a Quad Core Xeon w/ 1.8Ghz or a dual core 2.6 Ghz. Also what am I gaining for the loss in clock speed?

Which applications are you going to host on the VS? I would almost always recommend Quads simply because when your doing Virtual servers you can have many different processes than normal running...(and it will run better even with lower clock speeds)

I am going to be running SQL Server on some of the virtual servers. How much of a clock speed drop should I tolerate ?

SQL no question go with quads then. I don't recommend doing SQL on a virtual server (although it works just fine) because of the disk I/O but that was not your question.

1.8's would probably do just fine, although if it were me i'd go for the 2.0 Ghz. Whatever the case you want cpu's with 4 megs of cache for SQL.
