Hoping someone can help since I am about ready to throw this thing out of the window.
I replaced my Radeon 9800 pro to boost my frame rates after upgrading to Vista. However, since installing the VisionTek x1950 pro XGE Windows gets to the point where it is about to display the desktop and then crashes and the PC is booting again. Windows has NEVER booted up successfully with this card in it.
I can boot into Safe mode okay and I can boot into standard Vista if I disable the video card in Device Manager and let Windows treat it as a standard VGA. However, if I then install/re-install the Catalyst drivers the system crashes on the next boot. I have tried all drivers from VisionTek and ATI from 7.1 onwards.
This is the 256MB AGP 8x version of the card. I have a 500watt power supply, 8x 1.5v motherboard (ASUS P4P800 SE) and no onboard video to disable. I can put the 9800 pro back in and everything is okay. I put the x1950 pro XGE in and boot up and get the crash. Both power connectors are plugged in. I am not sure of the full specs of my PSU, apart from 500watts, but I unplugged everything but the card and still no luck.
I have tried removing the drivers using driver cleaner etc. I have run the Intel 865 motherboard driver installation. I simply do not know how to get Vista (32bit Home Premium) booted up with this video card. I am about to take it back to the store to get a GEforce.
It is pretty useless to tell us that you have a 500W PSU, we can't tell if the card is getting enough power or not.
Assuming the card is getting enough power, I'd try to do a clean installation of windows. I've read that Ati drivers tend to be picky even with their own line up of cards. However I do have the feeling that this is a power related issue, since it crashes right when the video card is starting to be needed the most, to use Windows Aero.

Can anyone help?
Anyway to test the hardware in XP? Maybe a knoppix boot CD would allowing you to test your GPU. Vista drivers are a ways off from being good.
