hey guys as of late my card has been giving me artifacts as presents along with the occasional locks and garbled images.

I think i found the root of the problem :
my 8800GTS core clock is up by 13MHz to 513Mhz(should be 500Mhz for 8800GTS).

So shall i set it back to 500Mhz?
what do u say folks?

I would set it back as far as it goes. It's safer that way.

the problem is that this card is a normal stock settings card from XFX(not the overclocked version)and the factory setting is 513Mhz and the memory bus speed is 792Mhz which should be 800Mhz.
indications of a faulty card???

How far can you underclock it? can you get below 400?

how bigs is the power supply your using? check to see if the 8800 is getting decent air flow it may be overheating then try re installing the drivers for the video card if it still persists underclock it to the point where it does not artifact anymore AND OR just RMA it XFX should be fine with it.

MY Evga card has the same factory settings and have no problems what so ever. In fact (I never overclock my gear for fear of damage) I cranked it up with NTune by about 20% for a few hours last week and it ran perfect then as well. It's 'prolly not the card. Do the above ANanan has got it right. (And a very nice avatar too...)

No, these are the settings for all "stock" 8800 GTS cards.
Artifacting at stock speeds can be a sign of a faulty card, underclocking it to loose the artifacts is not the way to go. If your power supply is sufficient it's time for an RMA.

i have an Antec Earthwatts 500W which has 34A on the 12V rails which is more than sufficient for the XFX 8800GTS card.and one thing i have noticed is that only when i crank up the detail and other things like AA i encounter artifacts.this happened when i was playing Halo2 with everything set to max.i am yet to get such artifacts at lower settings.

Have you checked to see if the fan is spinning correctly, maybe it isn't providing the proper cooling? What are the temps that you're getting?
Also, (I don't have Vista) is the driver for Vista as good as the ones for XP? Maybe at higher detail there are issues in Vista?

Sounds like overheating to me. (I know I hear the echo too) Check fan speeds and temps. From my experience, driver issues cause poor framerates more often than they cause artifacts, but it may be worth checking. It may just be a bad card... RMA if that's the case.
