I guess I would comsider myself somewhat of an ATI person, but really I just want to see a good midlevel card come out in the near future. Hopefully, this market share slip makes AMD bring in new cards that match Nvidia because they seem to be a good bit beyond thus far.
After reading this article i was very suprised at the amount of market share ATi has lost and also there lower shipment numbers, and on top of that the amount NV's shipment numbers up 80%, from 14.5 to 26.5 million units. NV also has almost twice the market share as ATi in the desktop arena.
AMD seems to be lagging on all fronts cpu/chipset/graphics right now.
Sweeping plans of actions are hopefully in effect.
The funny thing is AMD is actually increasing on the CPU and Chipset market.
For graphics it's not surprising for the past quarter as the HD2400/2600 were non-existent so the GF8600 was selling pretty hot into the BestBuy and OEM segment. ATi/AMD probably relied alot on their DX9 sales in the X1650-1950 segment which is where they own that segment for the DIY buyer, but that represents a much smaller segment of the market, so they're just not going to pull in those kind of numbers overall, especially when most OEMs and System Builders were moving to the new GF8 series. It'll be interesting to see what the numbers are when both companies have new hardware in the space, and I expect the %s to shift a bit with some nV loss and some AMD gains (with intel stay the same droping just a little bit more to AMD and nv) but nothing truely dramatic like a reversal, simply a slight shifting of the numbers.
Neither company has the killer mid-market card so anyone could launch something new and flip all these numbers, we just need that quality product that would sell a boat-load, like the R9500P/R9600P or GF7600GT.
