I'm looking to purchase either the Toshiba HD 36"-HF73 or the Sony HD
KD-36XS955.
I can get the Toshiba at Costco for $900 (where I have to buy a stand and I
have to arrange delivery myself) and the Sony for $1600.(where the stand and
delivery are included in the price)
The Toshiba has a DVI input where the Sony has an HDMI Interface as well as
the ability to use the cable card slot where you don't even need a set-top
box.
Is there a great difference between the DVI input as compared to the HDMI
input?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,Brentski

DVI = Video
HDMI = Video and Audio

The video characteristics are the same in both.

Note regarding cable card - without a set-top box you want have access to
two-way features, such as ordering PPV (can usually be done via phone) but
more importantly you won't have program guide info.

Check if the Toshiba DVI supports HDCP, some HD-boxes will not pass a signal
if the DVI isn't HDCP enabled, and will require you to use component cable.
HDMI is HDCP enabled by specification. DVI may or may not be HDCP enabled,
depending on the product.

I think you meant HDCP not "HPCP"... DVI is a type of connector that can
carry a digital video signal (DVI = digital video interface), whereas HDCP
is an encryption protocol used to prevent/circumvent copying of digital
signals carried through the DVI connector. Some of the older sets equipped
with DVI are actually not HDCP compatible, meaning they won't accept a
digital signal through DVI if it's encrypted with HDCP. This can cause
significant problems as most of the cable/satellite boxes nowadays output a
HDCP-encrypted signal.

Just in case you were wondering about HDMI as well, it is the same as DVI (a
type of physical connector / electrical interface), with the difference that
it can also carry a digital audio signal. DVI only carries video. The newer
TV sets ship with HDMI or with both.
