I'm stuck with a 939 socket mobo (a8n-sli deluxe) for the time being. I believe my video card, a 8800gts, is being bottle necked by my old single core 4000+. 939 cpus look to be getting scarce so I want to upgrade my cpu now.

Ones I am looking at are the Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Toledo and the Opteron 165 Denmark.

Given that I don't plan to upgrade much more (maybe another gig of ram on top of the 1 I already have), the fact that I intend to play modern video games with this rig, and that fact that I have some knowledge of overclocking, what do you think the best processor for me is?

I believe most games are still single threaded, so a dual core with slower individual cores would probably bottleneck you even more. As far as single cores go that's one of the best ones.

Be sure either to overclock to 2.4GHz+ or get one clocked at that speed, otherwise you may see a reduction in speed. As jt001 said, most games are still wholly or mostly single threaded, and even a 16 core CPU won't run them any faster. I was in almost your exact situation (I had a 3800+), and upgraded to an FX-60. I am pretty certain you can't find my processor new anymore, so your best bet is probably one of the Optys.

Reading various user reviews stating that the opteron 165 can go as high as 2.85GHz with stock voltage. anyone think that is even possible? I can only get my 2.4ghz 4000+ up to 2.63GHz on stock voltage.

I personally think you should stick with what you have now if it's working good for you, I don't think it will be bottlenecking that video card though I could be wrong, but I wouldn't put any more money into that socket(I'm kinda in the same position, but I want a new mobo rather than CPU)

If you can just wait until you have the money to get a new board, cpu and ram if the situation allows.
