No icons at all; black screen only

I turn on laptop and it start but no icon appear, and that leaves me helpless, cannot do any kind of task on pc. Could this be a virus?

Thanks for everyone helps! I did get the laptop back up and running! I did something that I thought would never work........but it did!! Anyone else having this problem I suggest you try this at:
