Ive read it in more than one place, just dont recall. Last year nVidia stated theyd start releasing top units before Christmas from now on. Thats official. But what Ive read, itll be in Nov.

indeed...a yearly cycle. The g92 should be launching q4 2007. ^_^..a month or so before the crysis launch. Which would make sense considering how current dx10 cards really can't push it well. I'm waiting for that series to nab myself a complete new rig.
Yeh that is why I went with a £160 7950GX2. Actually performs better than the 8800gts 320mb, it was cheaper and that DX10 card probably wont be too good in DX10 games anyway.

With PCI-Express 2.0 coming out wouldn't the next step be something supporting it. Then you have Crysis and the holiday season, with Penryn coming out just adds to the mix. Its going to explode and I'm going to be right in the middle of it.

The 8xxx series is much like the original Geforce 256. Great card but really just an opener for DX10, 8xxx series will be old before you know it.

systemlord...you are following my path as well ^_^..
I've been holding off my new rig. But when penryn, x38, barcelona, g92 are released..I'm getting my new rig..A cooler master stacker with all the fan slots filled up (9 or 11 of them with 120mm fans..forgot if it was 9 or 11 slots). Water cooling...and lots of oc'ing...If the penryn launches are only the high end I might just nab a q6600 for temporary...until the mid range penryn processors come out to nab one of those. Or who knows...barcelona might actually come out and perform better considering it's a native quad core..It might work better for supreme commander and crysis considering core utilization..but we'll have to wait and see....
Gotta get a 26 inch widescreen flat panel too >_<..bah..a lil over 5 grand probably gone >_<.
The only good thing is most newer mobo's (mine included)can support Penryn but not PCI-E 2.0. Will G92 be able to run on PCI-E 1.1 I think yes, Nvidia isn't going to shoot themselfs in the arm. Right now I so need a new graphics card, but I know that I must bite the bullet and wait. I have already ordered a Enermax Infiniti PCI-E 2.0 ready PSU, even though it can only handle one PCI-E 2.0 card.

I know you'll be able to run pci 1.1 cards in a 2.0 environment. But once cards exceed the 1.1 maximum bandwith I don't think there would be a point in using a 2.0 card in 1.1. Don't get me wrong. It will probably work...But it will be bottle necked. The upside to the pcie 2.0 interface is the fact that the bandwith has been doubled from the 1.1's 2.5 GB to 5.0...the PCIE 2.0 interface also allows more energy to be transferred to the pci slot..so it can eliminate the need of a 4 pin molex connector for graphics cards...But IMO still would be safe to use it...but depends imo on what is recommended from the gfx card manufacturer.
But the answer...probably yes...cards the exceed the 2.5 gb limit should still work in 1.1 slots...but it wouldn't be very wise bottlenecking yourself like that. Better to upgrade...
But keep in mind atm that current cards don't surpass the 2.5 gb mark..but the g92 and r700 might just do that...or maybe the next generation ahead of them.
Nvidia doesn't have to release anything. There current graphics market share in Q2 '07 according to Jon Peddie Research is now 32.6% and leading at 43% in the desktop market.
AMD/ATI is behind at 19.5% and 23% in the desktop market.
PCIE 1.1 is nowhere near maxed out yet. AGP 8x is only now beginning to show bandwidth limitations. PCIE 2.0 main advantage is its abilty to provide more power through the socket. Cant remeber how many watts exactly off top of my head. The extra bandwidth will become useful in around a years time.
The inquirer ran the original story that G92 would be coming out in November and would be the 9800GTX and GTS
the inquirer also ran the story saying that an 8900 would be out "mid-summer" with a GPU speed of 750mhz... what actually came out was the Ultra with a GPU speed of 612mhz
other (dare I say more reliable) sites have since stated that the G92 will infact be an 8800 class GPU with a 256bit memory controller and 512mb or ram, putting it price and performance wise somewhere between the GTS640 and the 8600GT
the supposed "specs" for the 9800 have only appeared on forums, and everywhere I've seen it quote the x-bit labs posting by a complete unknown with no evidence to back up where they might have come from
solid information didn't come out about the G80 till mid september last year, with the official release on 8th November, so I'm guessing we're still in for a long wait on any worthy information
It is absolutely not true.
For one thing, as mentioned above, I'm going to some of the manufacturers websites of the 8 series cards and many seem to be sold out and on backorder, even at newegg you'll see some 8800 cards on backorder. They are still selling like hotcakes.
And with the more recent introduction of the 320mb cards as well as the even more affordable lower end cards that are selling since everybody wants a dx10 card, and now can afford at least a crappy one, nvidia would be dumb to launch a new 9 series so soon.
Nvidia and all the manufacturers are more than happy to milk the cow with the 8 series cards. And given that true dx10 games are still a ways off, I don't see that changing any time soon. How dumb would it be to release a 2nd generation of dx10 cards when dx10 games aren't even out yet? Makes no sense. I'm still surprised the 8 series were released as soon as they were.
Regardless, I along with many other people have probably read what is really going on.
What they are doing is releasing the 8900 card at the end of the year. So they will be getting sales from that along with the rest of the 8 series cards probably being cheaper than ever, and not only that but real dx10 games will be here or near at that time and so for those still without the 8 series this will be a great time to get them.
Furthermore, I hope they don't soon come out with a 9 series card. Right now they need to get their asses working on solid drivers. And given that they need to deal with both XP 32/64 and vista 32/64 that is a lot of driver work that needs done. And as dx10 itself gets gradually patched up the drivers will need to do the same, they can't slack off there.
Anyhow, truth is you can look forward to the 8900 at the end of the year. That is about it, the 9 series can and will wait. Even though we always have people here who would buy the 9 series if they came out today, it just doesn't make sense to release a 9 series in the near future to the mainstream.
