This is a poster child example
of why Microsoft is so universally despised. The search utility on
Windows XP is somewhere between arcane and useless. Where is there the old field for seeking text strings? That alone infuriates. Microsoft is today what it always was, Dilbert writ large.

If you're using the windows search, look at the bottom of the right hand frame. Look for a link that says 'click here to use search companion'.

Launch 'Search' tool

1. Press 'Ctrl' and 'E' keys, the Search Companion will then appear.

1. Click 'View' in the menu bar
2. Move mouse to Explorer Bar
3. Check off 'Search'

You must have closed Search Companion accidentally at some point in time. By default that panel should appear.
