I have a 7 year old compaq presario BW 5000T that i bought brand new back in the year 2000 and it came with a 40GB hard drive and i wanted to know if its possible to replace it with a 160GB and will it be able to handle it ? any help is appreciated...

Sure you can substitute a 160 for the 40. I installed a 120 GB WD IDE on my Pentium III 450 mhz. replacing the 12 Gb Maxtor Fireball that the system came with. Still runs great!

In which case you won't be able to see more than 137GB because 48-bit LBA is not supported by ME.
