Hello.

I have an Asus Striker Extreme motherboard and it came bundled with a SupremeFX 5.1 Hi-Def soundcard by Analog Devices. It uses the SoundMAX utility. This utility sucks. I cannot control BASS or anything, just the volume.

Anyways, I also have a Creative Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 Digital which is a PCI card lying around not being used. I love the utility for this card and the sound is great.

Both cards are capable of 5.1.

My question is, which card is better...the one that came bundled with the Asus Striker Extreme or the Creative Sound Blaster one?

Would I be losing any functionality if I use a different sound card then the one that came with my ASUS? There are optical ports and other sound outputs on the motherboard.

The Supreme FXis very similar to an onboard so... I do like the idea that you can remove it if you want.

creative sound cards are the better choice of the two. If you have a gaming mobo then i would suggest the creative sound blaster x-fi extremegamer. $80 from newegg

You're buying a Striker? You should be able to afford a better sound card like the Creative Fatal1ty gaming sound card.

it is generaly always better to have a sound card than use onboard sound. creative products are pretty top notch (imho).
my audigy (series 1 gamer edition) has been in three systems now.
i dont know why people always gotta say go spend more money.
the card you have will do just fine. be sure to get new drivers from creative.

I do want to get another soundcard...but I think I may wait till Creative fixes its issues. I purchased a Creative card from BBY and installed it, but it basically sounded the same. Plus you can't use any software for the card yet so it makes no difference between the SupremeFX and the SoundMax.

Neither card lets me control bass!!! I hate not being able to do this.
I have a 5.1 system with a twin driver subwoofer (ADA995) which is powerful enough to blow a hole though your ear, and I don't want to reach behind it every time I want to turn it up or down.

I can be patient enough to wait until Creative gets it together.

Is anyone able to control the BASS output in Vista?

I go into control panel, sound, preferences, levels, but the "Sub" lever doesn't do anything.

Go find torrents of the Creative Vista driver CD. It has all the software.

 

Edit: Er, d'oh, that's only if it's an X-Fi.

None of the software works on Vista on Creative Cards from what I've read so far. This sucks big time.

Yes, this thread is over a year old, but I just got a Striker Extreme over the summer, and I was wondering if the slot for the SoundMax card only works for that card. Are there aftermarket sound cards that fit in that slot? (Is it a PCI Express x1 slot?)

That depends directly on the operating system you're using, however I have an ASUS Crosshair II Formula that also came with the SupremeFX II, and that soundcard IMO sucks in Vista64, so I changed it to the Creative Extreme Gamer Fatal1ty Pro PCI, which seriously rocks in full surround with the Creative Alchemy drivers for Vista.

Then your problem is more related to your speaker system, most new quality 5.1 surround systems have a desktop controller that will control your bass and sub output individually.

My Creative software works???????

What software are you exactly talking about, not working??????
