How to assign a mass storage device a location

I have an USB external backup drive connected to my computer and running Windows XP Home, the device manager says the device is working properly, and it gives the option for "safe USB hardware removal" and even lists it in the Device Manager, BUT it does not display the drive in My Computer, so I can not access it. In the device manager it says the location for the device is "0" - and I can not work out how assing a location. Can anyone please help me solve this problem?

You probably need to assign it a drive letter in disk management.

In device manager right click and select "Change drive latter and path"
Asinge a free drive letter and check in windows explorer/my computer.

Start-->right click on my computer-->manage <-- disk management, not device manager.
