I'm about to upgrade my computer and I'm finally going from crt to lcd monitor. I was wondering whether an 8800gts 320 is enough to support the 1680x1050 resolution on a NEC AccuSync ASLCD223WXM (22" ). I have bought neither of these parts so any changes can be made still.
A few other questions:
1. Is this a good monitor? if not, what is a good one for ~$250?
2. What are some good brands for a 8800gts?
3. Lastly, if these can go together, is 320mb enough?
tbh, i dont know much about the monitor, but, as far as rendering capability of the 8800gts 320 under DX9, it should handle that resolution without much difficulty at all (and much higher than that it seems even)
the move to DX10 however seems to be changing that (simply because of how much more demanding DX10 is), and that resolution seems to be more than it can handle easily then.
to me, as long as a game is above 20fps, its playable, and not much of a problem. for absolute smoothness under an fps game though, you may want around at least ~70-80fps min (imo), which may involve turning a few visual settings down below max

I have a 8800 320MB card -- my advice would be if you can afford the GTX then get it -- if you can only afford the 640MB GTS then stick with 320MB version.
A few factors: Money, patients, low detail, new cards.
Money: Can you afford better?
Patients: Can you wait for newer cards (rumour Q4)?
Low detail: Can you play a game knowing your not using full detail?
New cards: did I mention new cards?
P.S. I can't run Ghost recon: Advanced warfighter very well at all and I know there are a few other games out there which suffer under the 8800 320MB card. Its not a high spec card at all and the reviews you read that says it is are not being totally honest about what it can't do!
------------------------------Everything you do is just everything you have done!
The 8800gts 320 will be ok at the resolution you are looking at. But you will be pushing it to its limits if you have high details on. The 8800gts 640 will give you a little more headroom because of the extra memory allowing more and larger textures.
Alternativly the hd2900xt is starting to look very promising with a lot of the initial bugs sorted out and with the AA performance hit being reduced.
The GTS 320 is very good value and a strong performer, but it is not a high end card so you can't expect it to handle every game at maximum settings.
My advice would be to get a GTX if you can afford one - but it depends whether you feel that all that extra cash is worth one notch higher on the graphics settings.
In terms of brand, all cards stick very close to the reference design - so you just need to weigh up the price, included games and warranty.
