Hi everyone,

Im new to all this building your own system thing but have decided to give it a go.
So whilst researching what components to get i stumbled upon this forum and subsequently learnt about overclocking (didnt know such thing could be done until then!!)

So here are my queries:

If i was to buy a Q6600 and overclock it to 2.66GHz (a modest overclock if i understand correctly), do i in effect now have a Q6700 for a few hundred cheaper?

Also, does overclocking have any detrimental effects on the MB, RAM, CPU etc (providing everything is stable) over a sustained period of time.

Sorry if the answers are obvious but i really dont know - and everyone has to start somewhere, right?

Cheers,

Rob.

do i in effect now have a Q6700 for a few hundred cheaper? - Yes - http://compare.intel.com/pcc/showchart.aspx?mmID=891046...

detrimental effects on the MB, RAM, CPU etc (providing everything is stable) over a sustained period of time - Yes, cooling, extremity of OC, luck, quality of the part, etc., will all play a part.
