I prefer samsung drives. Lightscribe is a waste of money. HDdvd/bluray is kind of sketchy to buy into at the moment.
Agree with skittle. LG and Lite On both make good DVD Burners but my Samsung is quieter than either the LG or Lite On. Definitely get a DVD Burner and if you don't need the software, usually a somewhat stripped version of Nero, get an OEM although usually the price difference is only a couple of dollars. You can get either an ATA or SATA drive, e.g., if you're running out of SATA connectors get an ATA. Should be able to get one for around $30 from newegg if you're in the US. Generally, local retail stores really over charge you for DVD Burners
