I have a Dell Inspiron 5150 that had the hard drive stolen from it (long story) and now when I attempt to replace it, XP will not recognize the new drive and therefore can't install. I'm a bit of an idiot when it comes to these things, which might explain why I can't figure out anything to make it work. I have another drive that I have hooked up through an enclosure on a different laptop that works fine, but I tried it on the 5150 and it wouldn't recognize it either. So it doesn't seem to be a drive issue. When you go to the setup page from booting, there is no hard drive listed, and when you hit F6 during the initial XP CD boot, it can't find any drive to install to, so it exits. It's a long story (as I mentioned) and is getting very frustrating. Any suggestions on why this might be happening or what can be done would be much appreciated.

Try formating it as an NTFS drive using mfg repair/diagnostic software on a floppy or another computer
